Kitchen Window Ideas: Ventilation That Actually Works

Put the opening where the heat is

Cooking heat rises and pools at ceiling level. A window whose opening sash sits high — a top-hung casement or a louvred panel above the counter — clears that layer far faster than a slider at worktop height.

Give the air somewhere to go

Ventilation needs two openings, not one. Pair the window above the hob with any opening on the opposite side of the room and the kitchen will clear in minutes instead of hours.

Choose surfaces you can wipe

Cooking oil settles on everything within two metres of the hob. Smooth uPVC and powder-coated aluminium both wipe clean; deep textures and untreated timber do not.

Keep the insects out

A fixed mesh on the inside face lets you leave the window open while you cook, which is the whole point of having it.
