Why north light is different

A north-facing room never takes direct sun, so it gets even, diffuse daylight all day with almost no glare and very little heat gain. Artists have chosen north-facing studios for exactly this reason for centuries.

The trade-off is quantity: there is simply less of it. The design answer is bigger openings, not more of them.

Go tall before you go wide

Daylight penetrates a room roughly twice the height of the window head. Raising the head height to the ceiling pushes light deeper into the plan than widening the same window ever would.

Keep the frame out of the way

Slim aluminium sightlines and a fixed pane beside an opening sash give you the glass area without the frame shadow. In a north room, every centimetre of frame is light you do not get back.

Let the room help

Pale walls near the reveal, a light sill and a mirror on the return wall all bounce north light further in. Deep, dark reveals swallow it.
